Instant Vintage: A Walk Down Memory Lane
by Marley, Under the Mush
Do you remember your first day of school? How about your first dance recital, or basketball game? If you are like me, many memories from your earlier years have survived with the aid of photographs, home videos, certificates, and other trinkets that you have kept through the years. Memories are powerful, and the smallest thing, like a picture, a smell, or simply the sound of someone’s voice, can trigger them. One could say that our memories make up our own personal history. That being said, it would be only natural for someone with a degree in Ancient History to dedicate his or her life to preserving history, right? Latoya Henry thinks so. Her company, Memory Lane by Toya, is all about commemorating the things that make up people’s individual histories.
Through the art of decoupage, Toya takes everyday items like coasters, mirrors, and magnets, and makes them into mementos to be cherished for a lifetime. When asked to put into words the feeling she wants to create with her products she replies, “I’m all things nostalgic. I want to be an heirloom. I want to be that staple piece at home. I want , like, if you come to my house I’ll have a Memory Lane blanket or a throw over the couch. I just really want to be an heirloom. It’s all things memorable, anything that can spark a memory of a place and time that you love.”
